Branding Ancient Troy

My favorite painting in the Krannert Art Museum has a wordy title: Achilles Displaying the Body of Hector at the Feet of Patroclus. Being familiar with the Iliad, I was happy to find out that in my graphic design inquiry class I would be re-imagining the ancient city of Troy through branding exercises.

Inspiration & Sketches

Step one was applying research I did on the characterization of Troy (see in my bechance linked at the bottom of this page) to generate a map of Troy using Adobe Firefly. Below are some trial and error examples and my final map design, which is AI generated, but altered by me in Illustrator.

Inspired by circular ancient Greek pattern motifs

Form is a sun to reflect the sunny Mediterranean climate of the city.

Ridges symbolize the fortified wall around Troy

Troy was a city of Greek culture. The sun god Apollo supported Troy during the Trojan War. Yellow represents the Apollo.

Burnt orange references traditional Athenian red-figure pottery which is a combination of terracotta & black.

Black in combination with burnt orange references traditional Athenian red-figure pottery.

Three words I chose to personify the city of Troy guided my design decisions for a city word mark: Fortified. Decadent. Ancient.
